Professional Window Frosting & Privacy Film for NYC Offices & Commercial Glass

Signs New York designs, cuts, and installs custom window frosting and privacy film for corporate offices, conference rooms, medical facilities, retail storefronts, and commercial interiors across New York City.

We work with premium frosted vinyl films — including General Formulations 790 series as our standard frost, and specialty films like 3M Dusted Crystal and 3M Fasara for projects that call for a more refined finish or decorative patterning. Every installation is precision-cut in-house at our 10,000 sq ft facility in New York using CNC vinyl plotters that handle complex logos, fine lettering, and intricate patterns with sharp, clean edges.

From a single conference room privacy band to a full-floor glass frosting rollout across a Midtown corporate office, we manage the project from measurement through installation — coordinating with building management, providing COIs, and scheduling around your business hours.

What Is Window Frosting?

Window frosting is a translucent vinyl film applied to glass surfaces that simulates the appearance of sandblasted, acid-etched, or textured glass — at a fraction of the cost. It diffuses light and obscures visibility from both sides while still allowing natural light to pass through, creating privacy without making a space feel dark or enclosed.

Unlike actual glass etching (which permanently alters the glass surface), frosted vinyl is removable, replaceable, and fully customizable. It can be cut into any shape — logos, lettering, patterns, banding strips, decorative borders, or full-panel coverage — and applied to glass doors, partitions, sidelights, transoms, conference room walls, and storefront windows.

In modern NYC offices where glass partitions have replaced drywall, frosted vinyl has become an essential tool for creating privacy zones, meeting code requirements for glass safety markings, and integrating brand elements into the architecture of the space without permanent modification.

Distraction Markings & Glass Safety Compliance

Every frosting project is custom-cut and installed to your glass dimensions and design requirements.

Full-height glass panels, glass doors without frames, and glass partitions in commercial spaces can be nearly invisible — creating a real collision hazard. Distraction markings are visual elements applied to the glass at eye level to make it visible and prevent accidents.

Most businesses default to generic dots or horizontal lines to satisfy the requirement. But distraction markings don’t have to be boring. We design custom distraction graphics that integrate your company logo, brand pattern, or architectural design language into the safety element — so the marking serves double duty as both a code-compliant safety feature and a branded design element.

Whether it’s your logo repeated in a grid, a subtle geometric pattern, or a continuous branded strip at eye level, the result is glass that’s safe, compliant, and on-brand — without looking like an afterthought.

Branded Logo Markers

Your logo repeated as the distraction element — safety and branding in one.

1st Surface vs. 2nd Surface Application

Frosted film can be applied to either side of the glass. Here’s the difference.

1st Surface (Front / Facing Side)

The film is applied to the side of the glass that faces the viewer — typically the corridor or public-facing side. The frosted texture is directly touchable. This is the standard application for most interior office frosting.

Standard for most office partitions and doors

2nd Surface (Back / Protected Side)

The film is applied to the opposite side of the glass — the inside of the conference room, for example. The glass itself protects the film from physical contact, extending its lifespan and keeping it cleaner longer.

Installation & Building Coordination

Glass frosting requires precision application — and in NYC, it requires building coordination.

Frosted vinyl installation on commercial glass demands clean surfaces, controlled conditions, and precise alignment — especially for privacy banding, logo cut-outs, and distraction markings where even a millimeter of misalignment is visible. Our installers use wet application methods for large panels and dry application for smaller elements, ensuring bubble-free, perfectly level results.

Most commercial buildings in NYC require a Certificate of Insurance from any vendor performing work on the premises. Many also have rules about elevator access, work hours, and floor protection. We handle all of this — coordinating directly with your building management or property manager so the install happens on schedule without surprises.

Care & Maintenance

Cleaning

Wipe gently with a soft, damp microfiber cloth. Avoid ammonia-based glass cleaners (Windex), abrasive pads, and paper towels — they can scratch and cloud the frosted surface over time. Use mild soap and water if needed.

Longevity

Standard frosted vinyl lasts 7+ years on interior glass with normal care. 3M Dusted Crystal and Fasara films can last 10+ years. Longevity depends on surface prep quality, cleaning habits, and exposure to direct sunlight (interior glass is typically not an issue).

Removal & Replacement

Frosted vinyl can be removed by peeling at a 45° angle with gentle heat. Some adhesive residue may remain and can be cleaned with a citrus-based remover. We offer professional removal and replacement services — old film off, new film on, same visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Window frosting is a translucent vinyl film applied to glass that simulates the look of sandblasted or acid-etched glass. It provides privacy by obscuring the view from both sides while still allowing natural light to pass through. It’s removable, customizable, and significantly less expensive than actual glass etching.

The terms are often used interchangeably. Both refer to translucent vinyl film applied to glass for privacy. “Window frosting” typically emphasizes the decorative, etched-glass appearance, while “privacy film” emphasizes the functional privacy aspect. The product is the same.

No — frosted vinyl is translucent, not opaque. It diffuses and softens light while allowing it to pass through. A frosted conference room will still receive natural daylight; you just won’t be able to see clearly through the glass from either side. If you need full light blocking, opaque vinyl or window wraps are a better choice.

Yes — two ways. We can cut your logo out of the frosted film so it appears as clear glass against a frosted background (negative space effect). Or we can apply your logo as frosted vinyl on clear glass (positive effect — frosted logo on clear glass). Both are CNC-cut for precision.

Distraction markings are visible elements applied to glass to prevent people from walking into it. NYC building code requires them on certain glass installations — particularly full-height frameless glass panels and doors. They can be simple (dots, lines) or branded (your logo as the marker). We advise on placement and design to help meet requirements.

Our standard frost is General Formulations 790 series — a smooth, durable matte frost that works for the majority of commercial projects. For premium or specialty applications, we use 3M Dusted Crystal (fine sandblasted texture), 3M Frosted Crystal (sparkle finish), Avery Etchmark, and 3M Fasara decorative patterned films. We recommend the right film based on your project’s look, budget, and environment.

Standard frosted vinyl lasts 7+ years on interior glass. Premium films like 3M Dusted Crystal and Fasara can last 10+ years. Longevity depends on surface preparation, cleaning habits, and environmental conditions. Interior glass (no direct sunlight or weather exposure) provides the longest lifespan.

Yes. Frosted vinyl is removable — peel slowly at a 45° angle, optionally using gentle heat to soften the adhesive. Some residue may remain and can be cleaned with a citrus-based adhesive remover. We also offer professional removal services if you’re replacing frosting or restoring the glass to clear.

Yes. Our installation team works across all five boroughs and the tri-state area. We coordinate with building management, provide Certificates of Insurance, and schedule installs around your business hours — including after-hours, weekends, and phased rollouts for multi-floor projects.

Standard turnaround is 3–5 business days from measurement and proof approval to installation. Rush scheduling is available for office move-ins, renovations, and time-sensitive projects. Multi-floor rollouts are phased over several days or weekends depending on scope.

No. Window frosting is a decorative, translucent vinyl film that provides privacy and aesthetic enhancement. Window tinting is a solar control film designed to reduce heat, glare, and UV transmission. They serve different purposes — frosting is about privacy and design; tinting is about climate and light control. We specialize in frosting and decorative film, not solar tinting.
