What Are Neon Signs?
Neon signs are a type of illuminated signage that uses neon gas to produce a bright and colorful glow. They are often used for advertising, decorative purposes, or as landmarks. Neon signs consist of glass tubes that are bent into various shapes to create letters, symbols, or designs. The tubes are filled with a low-pressure gas mixture, primarily neon and sometimes other noble gases like argon or krypton. When an electrical current passes through the gas, it ionizes the atoms, causing them to emit light.
The unique quality of neon signs lies in their ability to emit vibrant colors, including shades of red, orange, pink, blue, and green, depending on the type of gas used and any coatings applied to the inside of the glass tubes.
Neon signs gained popularity in the early 20th century and have been a staple of commercial signage, nightlife, and urban aesthetics ever since.
