What Are Custom Decals?
A custom decal is a design, image, or text printed onto or cut from adhesive-backed vinyl and applied to a smooth surface — glass, walls, vehicles, floors, metal, acrylic, or virtually any non-porous material. Unlike rigid signs, decals are thin, flexible, and conform to flat or gently curved surfaces, making them one of the most versatile branding and signage tools available.
Decals are produced in two ways: digitally printed (full-color images, photos, and complex artwork printed onto vinyl) or CAD-cut (individual letters, logos, and shapes cut from solid-color vinyl using CNC plotters). Most commercial decal projects combine both methods — printed panels alongside cut vinyl lettering.
They come in every size, shape, and finish: from a 2-inch logo for a laptop lid to a 10-foot vinyl lettering run across a storefront fascia. Available in permanent, removable, or repositionable adhesives depending on whether the application is long-term or temporary.
Decal vs. Sticker
Often used interchangeably. In the sign industry, "decal" typically refers to larger, surface-applied graphics for branding and signage. "Sticker" refers to smaller, portable items for packaging, giveaways, and products. See our custom stickers page.
Decal vs. Sign
A decal is applied directly to a surface. A sign is a separate physical object mounted to a wall, post, or structure. Decals are thinner, lighter, and less expensive, but don't have the dimensional impact of a built sign.
Printed vs. Cut Vinyl
Printed decals use digital printers to reproduce any image or design in full color. Cut vinyl uses CNC plotters to cut letters and shapes from solid-color vinyl — no printing involved. Each method has distinct advantages.
Permanent vs. Removable
Permanent adhesive bonds fully within 72 hours and is designed for years of use. Removable adhesive peels off cleanly — ideal for rental spaces, seasonal graphics, and temporary promotions.

Die-Cut, Contour, Halo — How Your Decal Gets Its Shape
The way a decal is cut determines how it looks, how it’s applied, and what it costs. Here’s the taxonomy.
Die-Cut
Cut to the exact perimeter of your design. No background, no border. The decal is the shape of the artwork itself. The cleanest, most premium look.
Contour Cut
Cut around the artwork with a small clear border (⅛"–½"). Slightly easier to handle than true die-cut while still following the design shape.
Halo Cut
Cut to a standard shape (rectangle, circle) with a visible margin of material around the graphic. Clean presentation, simpler production.
Straight / Poster Cu
Cut as a standard rectangle with no shaping. The simplest and most economical cut — best for window panels, banners, and rectangular graphics.
Kiss-Cut
Blade cuts through the vinyl but not the backing paper. Used for sticker sheets where multiple decals peel individually from a single sheet

Frequently Asked Questions
Custom decals are designs, images, or text printed onto or cut from adhesive-backed vinyl and applied to smooth surfaces — glass, walls, vehicles, floors, metal, and more. They’re used for branding, signage, identification, compliance, and decoration. They come in every size from 1-inch asset tags to 10-foot storefront lettering runs.
The terms overlap, but in the sign industry, “decal” typically refers to larger, surface-applied graphics for branding and signage (vinyl lettering on a door, a logo on a wall). “Sticker” refers to smaller, portable items like die-cut logo stickers, product labels, and promotional giveaways. We produce both — see our custom stickers page for die-cut stickers, labels, and sheets.
Die-cut means the vinyl is cut to the exact perimeter of your design with no extra material. Contour cut follows the design shape but leaves a small clear border (⅛”–½”) around the artwork. Die-cut looks cleaner; contour cut is slightly easier to handle during application. Both are CNC-cut for precision.
Yes. We match PMS (Pantone), CMYK, and hex color values. For cut vinyl, we stock hundreds of standard colors from 3M, Avery, and Oracal and can source custom PMS-matched film. For printed decals, we calibrate our digital printers to reproduce your brand colors accurately on the specific vinyl substrate and finish.
It depends on the vinyl type and environment. Cast vinyl: 7–12 years outdoors. Calendered vinyl: 3–5 years outdoors. Reflective vinyl: 7–10 years. Interior decals on walls or glass: 5–10+ years. Adding UV overlaminate extends outdoor life by 1–3 years. We recommend the right material and lamination based on your expected lifespan and conditions.
Yes. All vinyl decals we produce are waterproof and designed to withstand rain, washing, and moisture when properly applied to clean, smooth surfaces. Laminated decals offer additional protection against prolonged water exposure, chemicals, and abrasion.
We work with premium vinyl from 3M, Avery Dennison, Oracal, and Orafol. Specific products include 3M IJ-180 (cast wrap vinyl), Oracal 651 (standard cut vinyl), 3M 680 (reflective), and project-specific specialty films. We select the right material for each application based on surface, durability requirements, and finish.

Standard turnaround is 3–5 business days from proof approval. Rush and same-week production are available for time-sensitive projects like grand openings, fleet launches, and events. Recurring orders with templates on file are faster since we already have your design and specifications ready to go.
